i understand what you mean. but my son is very active, and plays video games seldom during the summer. he would much rather be outside, and thats fine with me! but i do remember in between slip & sliding, complaining to my mom about being bored, and wishing school would start. of course, then i would realize what i wished for and be horrified....

WORD! In my day (there it is again), "Can (so-and-so) come out and play?" was part of our daily vocabulary. Whither the kickball?

Um, slip'n'slides are broken ribs waiting to happen. But yeah, stomping through creeks, spending entire days at the community pool, chasing lightning bugs (OK, teenagers might be too cool for *that*), frisbee, stuff like that...in defense of the videogamers, though: anyone who wants to be a laproscopic surgeon might want to look into getting a nintendo-box-cube-squared-whatever-they're-called-now. Because, hello, joysticks and hand-eye coordination. Just an observation.

My kids would NEVER utter those words "i'm bored", because they will be handed a toilet brush and ushered to the nearest bathroom to scrub. Learned it from my mother. I only scrubbed ONE bathroom as a child. From then on out I would find books to read, trees to climb, and sock puppets to make.

Even though I grew up on the other side of the world my childhood was very similar. And even in winter we'd be outside kicking a football or riding bikes or getting into trouble somehow. Things are the same here in that you don't see many kids outside playing in summer, or any other time. I don't think it's just video games that are to blame though. Seems to me like it's a combination of things.

You're diary is great! Good entry too. As for video games, I know what a bad effect they have on me, a mature woman, and how they take up way too much time whenever they call for me. Like recently, I burned a pizza, because 40 minutes had passed just like that. Blasted video games! Terrible for kids. Society is doomed.

Sometimes I still see a group of kids on bikes, or in someone's front yard, and think "wow, that used to be me... I remember those days". Sprinklers and running around and stupid games that made sense at the time, and climbing up trees and on monkey bars! That's the killer difference. Kids these days don't get bars to climb on bars at school any more because surprise surprise, kids used to get *hurt* on them, so they've all been removed. Sure, you don't see as many kids with broken arms these days, but you also don't see as many kids who know how to do Death Drops.

I have to say that I love your entries. This one especially rings a bell with me. I've noticed the same thing in my neighborhood. I remember my parents having to threaten me within an inch of my life to get me to come inside on summer nights. I wished they would never end. In addition to the video-game travesty, I think too many parents watch the news, where every kidnapping or event is reported in excruciating detail, making parents afraid to let their kids do anything anymore. I mean, can you imagine being a kid, having to wear a helmet when you rode a bike? Come on!! I feel bad for my kids that they won't be able to feel the wind rushing through their hair while pedaling as fast as possible. I'll stop my rant now. Your diary kicks ass.
